1st January 2022: Self-found tick!

New year, new blog, and a new self-found tick! An enjoyable way to start 2022. I’ve been waiting to ‘bump’ into a cattle egret for a while. As I scanned the 8 little egrets on a small pool on Plumpudding Stables, Reculver, the 9th bird was a cattle egret. I’ve not seen one in the Reculver recording area before either, which makes the find even more rewarding. Also managed to find one white-fronted goose, a ruff feeding on a flooded field with a flock of lapwing and a razorbill landed relatively close to where I was scanning the sea. Derek Smith pointed me in the direction of a purple sandpiper (thank you Derek) and I enjoyed two different marsh harrier, a male first thing and then a female later in the day. Between 8am and 1pm I recorded 68 species in total. All within 10km of the house.

A poor photo of the cattle egret. There were 8 little egrets around the same pool
Distant white-fronted goose. A ruff was feeding the same field a few hours later.
A colour-ringed sanderling close to the two turnstone. I think 2 red right, with red above green(?) left. There seems to be a ‘flap’ on the green right ring.
